Skin Savvy – Get Your Skin Ready For Summer

In need of summer spending funds? Enter to Win a $100 Cadillac Fairview shop! card® gift card from Sherway Gardens below.

With the weather heating up and the tank tops and short-shorts coming out, getting your skin ready is top priority. Winter and the cold are really harsh on skin and as much as we try to keep it moisturized and smooth, are efforts seem to be thwarted. But fear not, there is still hope (and time) to get your skin looking its best for summer. Here are some easy ways to get every inch of your skin to glow.

For the hands: To get smooth hands and moisturized cuticles, apply a rich cream at night and put on cloth gloves right after. The gloves allow your skin to absorb the product and keep your hands soft.

Try: Spa Gloves Sephora Collection, $42. Available at Sephora.

Tip: I like to use a nourishing body oil when my nails and cuticles are extra dry. Try
Kiehl’s Superbly Restorative Argan Dry Oil, $42.

For the face: To get that amazingly jealous glow that only pregnant women seem to get, use a masque or peel to remove the dull, dead layer of skin. At-home peels are a quick fix to brighten up your skin.

Try: philosophy micro exfoliating triple-acid brightening peel, $88. Available at Sephora.
Aveda Tourmaline Charged Radiance Masque, $44.50. Available at Aveda in Sherway Gardens.

For the feet: Use a scrub to remove the dry, dead skin. There’s nothing worst then having pretty polish on dry, cracked feet. Throughout the summer take care of your feet with a weekly pedicure and bring on the sandals.

Try: True Blue Spa Smoothing Foot Scrub, $16. Available at Bath & Body Works.

For the legs: Always apply moisturizer to moist skin right after getting out of the shower. Constant shaving and waxing can do a number on your skin so it’s essential to take care of your legs throughout the year.

Try: Josie Maran Whipped Argan Oil Ultra-Hydrating Body Butter, $44 Available at Sephora.

Tip: To reduce the number of in-grown hairs, use a gentle exfoliator the day after shaving and everyday after that.

  • Bonnie Lui

I use the complete Sothys line for my daily facial care. The key is to form good habits and ensure a nightly cleansing routine followed by skin care products for hydration.

  • Leslie

favourite skincare tip – water, drink lots of it…

  • Parveen

Favorite moisturizer is Clinque Moisture Surge for my uber dry skin, topped with Neutragena’s SPF 45 dry touch sunscreen (detest shiny). For my footsies, I use Bag Balm (uber greasy balm) so they can not get all cracked & icky. And for those pesky summer bug bites/irritations, Aveeno Oatmeal Bath. Soo nice when the itch won’t go away.

  • Aliya D.

This is an old home remedy from my grandmother for great skin and scalp… Plain, organic coconut oil or almond oil. Once a week, apply either oils directly to your scalp and skin right after a bath/shower and exfoliation and leave in for a few hours. After you wash it out, your scalp will be less likely to flake, the hair will be smooth and lusturous; your skin will be shiny and smooth and have a healthy glow.

  • SweetPanda

I love Fresh’s SUGAR FACE POLISH Mask!

  • Izabella

I drink lots of water, use my favorite moisturizer Clinique Moisture surge + Clarins UV Ecran 40. Somedays when I need matte face and SPF and have no time I use korean BB cream by Missha.
Other than that throughout the year I use hand and feet creams, always different brands and stick to Burt’s bees cuticle cream.

  • SweetPanda

My skin care tip: drink some warm water first thing in the morning and it will help you to detox your body and thus will help to have nice healthy glowing skin (that’s what my mom told me)

  • Melissa Avey

I LOVE Dermalogica products but I wear makeup every day so I like to use Almay makeup removing cleanser.

  • Colleen

I have religiously used Moisturizer on my face since I was in high school, but I tended to skip my neck. I have learned that you need to treat your neck the same way you treat your face in order for it to age gracefully.

  • Katelyn Zborowski

I keep my alcohol-free facial toner from Lush Cosmetics in the fridge. When I’m feeling hot, or just after a shower, I’ll grab it and spritz my skin to close up my pores and enjoy a chilling sensation! It’s great for rushing away redness and calming my skin.

  • SweetPanda

Try to sleep before 11:00 pm every night. After a month, you will notice that there’s a change in your skin colour and of course, more healthy looking and no under eye circle for most people

  • Melanie

My favourite tip is for the lips. (That counts too right? :p). Summer or winter, the best thing you can do is get a really good lip balm with spf! I’ve been liking eos lemon with spf. Healthy lips are beautiful lips! 🙂

  • Burcu

I like Yves Rocher and Olay Products

  • SweetPanda

I love Origins’ A Perfect World™ Antioxidant Moisturizer with White Tea

  • SweetPanda

My favourite toner is Clinique Clarifying Lotion

  • Lindsey

I’m a big believer in less is more when it comes to your skin health, I use a tinted moisturizer with SPF (my fave is aveno) and thats it! I wash my face with a balea cleansing wipe each night and the most important part of my skincare regime is drinking lots of water and avoiding soft drinks

For readers with a combination skin (t-bone area and nose is oily, but cheeks are dry):

    – Remove Makeup EVERY NIGHT: never keep your makeup on at night, remember 1 night with makeup = 4 days aged. To remove makeup, never use your eye makeup remover whether it is oil free or not.

    I use:

Eyes- Clinique (Sephora/ Bay/ Sears), Take The Day Off Makeup Remover (TIP: Place on cotton pad and fold on top of index finger, gently rub in circles from top to bottom)

Face- H2O (Sears), Sea Results 3-in-1 Foaming Cleanser (For Heavy Makeup)
Sea Results Sea Mineral Cleanser (For Lighter Makeup)

Care- After Cleansing face go into the shower, and after the shower, have all your skin care (H2O Face Oasis™ Dual-Action Exfoliating Cleanser C) and moisturizer(s) (H2O Face Oasis™ Hydrating Treatment Gel) ready. Exfoliate your skin, while your pores are still open, and moisturize promptly after. (TIP: The H2O Hydrating Treatment Gel is designed so it can be used as an everyday moisturizer or a mask! Use a thin layer, evenly, all over the skin and wait 5 minutes (I leave it on for 30) and then rub the rest into the skin to absorb.)

Lips: To get rid of those pesky dried skin on your lips, use Carmex before bed- Slather a thin layer onto your lips and let it sit for 30 seconds, gently (VERY GENTLY) pick off the dried skin and then reapply the product for a more thicker layer and wear it to sleep. This way, within the time span of rest, your lips will heal, and with the help of the product, recover.

Ocean Salt by Lush – exfoliates your skin well, I have been using it to exfoliating my hands and legs as well. It leaves a smoothing effect.

My moisturising routine has been a product from drug store – called Aveeno. I have been using it for years now. I love it because it’s NOT greasy at all!

Another product I have been loving is BB cream by Marcelle, its great because its lightweight and you require no foundation after. The only thing I dislike about this product is the fact it leaves my skin abit oily after couple of hours.
I want to try other bb creams, any suggestions.

  • Judy

I love cetaphil gentle face cleanser. It works well with and without water, very gentle on the eyes and for sensitive skin. I also like Philosophy’s facial cleanser (Purity). AND my most favourite face lotion is Clinique’s dramatically different motorizing gel.

  • Stephanie

Nothing over the counter worked for my heavy secreted sebum acne skin! So I have to use a doctor prescribed facial wash and cream and they work awesomely! But I do use St Ives Timeless Skin Renew & Firm Apricot Scrub to exfoliate before I wash and L’Oreal Youth Code day/night cream after I apply the prescribed creams (Finacea and Duac). They’re my favorite as of right now. 😀

  • Vanessa Bower

Some of my absolute favorite summer beauty products include Lioele Water Drop BB cream that I purchased from an online beauty store Pretty &Cute that sell Asian beauty products and supplies! I love it because it has quite a high SPF of 27 and it just makes my skin feel as look flawless while protecting it from the harsh uv rays! I like to mix it with Stilla’s illuminating tinted moisturizer and set it with Benifet’s Get Even pressed powder! These three products keep my skin looking flawless and healthy during the uncomfortable summer months!

  • SweetPanda

My favourite mask is L’Occitane ‘s Spring Clean Cooling Clay Mask! I feel so refreshing and clean each time I use it!

  • marla

    Drink lots of water 🙂

  • Natalie

I love Clinique’s 3 Step Skin Care line. I’m also a big fan of the Body Shop’s Tea Tree Blemish Fade Night Lotion.

  • SweetPanda

Always apply sun screen or moisturizer with SPF when you go out no matter whether it is sunny or not. This will help to prevent or minimize the formation of freckles

  • Tarek

My Fav skin care is Neo Strata. The products really work! Cheers

  • Gloria

I have sensitive, acne-prone skin and have had troubles with it for YEARS. After a quick visit to Korea last summer where beauty and skincare is a big big deal, my cousins gave me a quick ‘take care of your face 101’ lesson. This is my new routine:

    1. Cleanser for sensitive Skin- Right now I’ve been using a line called Biophora that was recommended by Salima from Lusso Medical… it does wonders!

    2. Toner- Seaweed Clarifying Toner from The Body Shop

    3. BioPhora Bioactive Gel It helps even out skin complexion!

    4. AM Cream: La Roche Posay Hydrdaphase UV lotion It locks everything in from the toner + it protects you from the sneaky UV rays~
    PM Cream: Biophora Antibacterial Veil
It’s SO light and feels so so so smooth 🙂

    Once a week- Exfoliate!

It’s looks like a really long ‘face-list’ but once you get the hang of it, you’ll see huge improvements 🙂

  • SweetPanda

When I travel, my favourite cleanser is Aveeno Positively Radiant Dual-Textured Cleansing Pads! Love it as it has different texture on each side. One side to wipe away dirt and the other side is for cleansing.

  • Cheryl (@loucheryl)

I love to mosturize every night with Elizabeth Arden’s 8 hour mosturizer. I also exfoliate with a facial mud mask once a week!

  • SweetPanda

Skin care tip: if you have puffy eyes when you wake up, put two used tea bags in the freezer/fridge and then after it is cold, take it out and put them on your eyes for a short little while, it will help (this is the tip from my aunt)

  • Surendene J.

A few of my favourite skincare products are Aveeno Positively Radiant facial moisturizer (with spf) and Vasanti’s Eye Wonder cream. Thanks for the amazing giveaway! 😀

  • Melissa

I keep my skincare routine simple. I don’t sleep with make up on and drink plenty of water throughout the day, everyday. I use Spectro Jel cleanser and Cetaphil facial moisturizer with SPF 15. During the winter months I sometimes apply a light layer of vitamin E cream on my face before bed, concentrating around the eyes. Right now, I’m on the look out for an effective, but gentle exfoliator 🙂

  • SweetPanda

My favourite exfoliator is Dual-Action Refinishing Treatment. I love that when you apply it on your face, there is a warm feeling on the surface of your skin which helps to open up your pores and helps to purify it. I always feel very refreshing after using it on my face!

  • Lou

I’m a soap and water type of guy but I do enjoy the occasional facial at a nice spa!

  • Loretta

My skin care tip is always drink lots of water and have lots of veggie and fruits

  • Wilkins

My favourite skin care product is Clinique’s Skin Supplies For Men Anti-Fatigue Cooling Eye Gel

  • Lynn

I love all Lush bubble bar products!

  • Tanya

I love Neutrogena’s Comfort Cream. Nothing beats it!

  • Laura Crochetiere

Use a moisturizer with SPF – and keep a little bottle of sunscreen in your purse!

  • Maegan Morin

My favorite skin care product is anything from the Burt’s Bees Sensitive Skin care line. Its the first line that actually does what it says and it doesnt cause me to break out or rash out or any other nasty things that tend to happen with others products I have tried

  • Jennifer

    Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen!

  • YC

I love the Christian Dior Diorsnow White Reveal UV Shield SPF 50. I always wear it in the summer.

  • Angela

I absolutely love Stila’s stay all day 10-in-1 HD beauty balm. This product contains great coverage without sinking into fine lines and creases on the face. I was intrigued by the claim that the product was suited for all skin tones. No way. I’ve always had a hard time matching anything tinted to my skin color.
It’s used after the moisturizer and done. My skin looks finished, as if I actually took the time to put on makeup (foundation, concealer, powder, etc.). The skin looks healthy and refreshed. True test was being in the sun. It just so natural.
The product goes on smoothly. It doesn’t clump or pill when you put on more later. I’m impressed and excited about having this product. A claim that holds true is always a winner to me.

  • Christina D

I love using my DermaHA moisturizer cream. Take it with me everywhere I go 🙂

  • ET

I always use a scrub cloth (from the asian grocery store) and body wash to scrub in the shower. Exfoliates and cleans at the same time. Makes my skin really smooth.

  • melanie

drink lots of water, eat healthy and use a moisturizer with at least SPF 30 daily

  • CatLady

I love Burt’s Bees products. Especially the Radiance Facial Cleanser and the Radiance SPF 15 Day Lotion.

  • Reanna

I think it’s the Caribbean girl in me, but I have a slight obsession with Palmers cocoa butter. Leaves my skin moist for the day.

  • Licketysplit

It’s quite unfortunate that the contests are so restrictive that one must reside in the GTA to qualify. I am a loyal SG shopper, making trips into Etobicoke each quarter and spending thousands of dollars in two days so I would have loved to be able to enter my name to win a gift card. Why does one have to reside in the city? the contest should be open to Ontario residents. Whomever made this decision should reconsider. Those of us who live in rural areas have money to spend since we have very little choice in shopping where we live.

  • Pam Fontaine

I love Great Lash Mascara and mattifying lotion from Lancome. I have combination skin so I’m always trying to stay moisturized in the dry areas and control oil in the t-zone.
